Is it possible to ‘tattoo’ skin colored ink onto scars?

When I was little I always climbed and wandered around in this little rock quarry near my house and my legs always received a good beating. The skin has smoothed, but you can still see random red marks all over them. my boyfriend even said it looked like I had a red sharpie war and lost! Would a tattoo artist be able to correct this? and if so, how much would it generally cost?

Hi,

I don’t mean to sound rude, but the answers before me are totally wrong. I have two solutions for you. To start, it is impossible to tattoo skin-colored ink over red scars. First off, most companies don’t make any skin-colored inks. They could be mixed, but tattoo ink is not very opaque over other colors; that is, it’s fairly transparent if you tried to tattoo a lighter color over a darker color (your red scars).

Your best bet would be one of two things:

1) You can get “regular” tattoos over the scars. If they are everywhere, this would be hard, as you’d have to get a lot of tattoos. But black tattoo ink would most likely cover your old scars, since they are healed and flat. Sometimes ink won’t stay in scars, but I would venture to guess that many of yours could be covered. Also, dark colored ink (red, blue, green) might help to blend the scars into tattoos. A good way to tattoo over the areas on your legs would be to get larger pieces that incorporate all of the scarred areas, like vertical text up and down your leg, or something like a vine that could wrap around and cover each scar. Tattoos can run from relatively cheap to very expensive. Most shops have a “shop minimum” which is the lowest they’ll charge for a tattoo. In LA, this is usually between $60 and $150. Other tattoo shops charge by the hour. So if you had a lot of things you needed to cover, they might charge you by the hour or one flat rate. It’s impossible to give you an estimate unless I saw how many scars there were, and how big they are. You can go to any tattoo shop though and ask them what they think.

2) If you don’t want to be covered in tattoos, your best bet would be laser scar removal. This works in the opposite way of tattooing: the lasers either “burn” or slough off the top layers of skin. There are also people who use medically formulated bleach-type products to remove scars. This would have to be prescribed by a doctor. If you have health insurance, try asking a dermatologist for their suggestions. They can give you more info, an evaluation, and/or prescriptions or referrals for something to remove the scars. Laser removal typically costs about $50-$100 per square inch and can take up to 5 or 6 sessions to remove scars completely.

Good luck sweetie!
