Ohio Climbers

What is the piece of music used in Top Gear when Clarkson in an Audi races 2 rock climbers up a mountain?
I am particularly after the piece that is played when the climber base jumps from the summit and parachutes to the ground.
The clip is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNAE7e9JTXo The particular piece of music I mean is at 7 minutes in!
Well, I don’t watch this program but, as a singer, I performed a track by Fleetwood Mac at a gig of mine.I was told that this was the theme tune for Top/Fifth Gear–”The Chain”–Fleetwood Mac.

5.fun Guide To Joshua Tree (Book 1, Trash Can Rock) $0 I love rock climbing.I also love Joshua Tree National Park. Thus, when I am rock climbing in Joshua Tree National Park I am pretty close to Nirvana. I have visited the park a couple of dozen times over the past ten years. Which tells you a lot, because I have to come from Ohio! This guide provides information that may help you, modest climber, experience some of the same joys, challenges, and peace that are to be found while climbing in the park.Once upon a time, or maybe “back in the day” as the kids say now, some of the moderate and moderately hard routes were what I did when I came here. Now, after hip replacement and too many good meals, it’s the 5.fun and easy routes that interest me. They present the challenge now that other routes provided back then. This 5.fun guide is intended for the climber who maybe can’t walk as far as the other climbers, who maybe can’t climb routes as hard as other climbers, who likes someone else to make breakfast, who will probably pick up a small gift for the grandchildren or the children or nieces and nephews before returning home, and who gets excited on the rock no matter what the ratings say. Thus, this guide only discusses the 5.fun routes. All the routes are visible in the photographs, and many other excellent guides will provide you information about the 5.hard routes that are interwoven with thte 5.fun routes. This 5.fun guide is organized into chapters that each represent an entire days of climbing for someone like me, a 50 year old (at the time of writing) hip replacement recipient who on his good days climbs 5.7 gym routes that are thirty feet long and on his average day climbs 5.4 routes and has more fun doing so than pretty much anyone else. |

A Naturalist’s Guide to the Southern Blue Ridge Front: Linville Gorge, North Carolina, to Tallulah Gorge, Georgia $14.95 For hikers, climbers, naturalists, botanists, zoologists, wildflower enthusiasts, waterfall watchers, and all who enjoy exploring the outdoors, this field guide offers detailed descriptions of more than fifty natural areas in the gorge region of the Blue Ridge province. Veteran naturalist L. L. Gaddy, Jr., shares his extensive knowledge of this scenic, biologically diverse region, which runs from North Carolina’s Linville Gorge to Tallulah Gorge in Georgia, and offers practical advice on how to best experience its many rock pinnacles, deep ravines, wildflower coves, and spectacular waterfalls.Describing areas that range in size from less than fifty to more than ten thousand acres, Gaddy provides comprehensive information on well-known sites — Table Rock State Park, Caesar’s Head State Park, Whiteside Mountain, Chimney Rock Park, and Raven Cliff Falls — along with many lesser-known areas — Wolf’s Lair, Thompson River Gorge, Chattooga River Narrows, and Chauga River Gorge. For each location he outlines points of interest, flora and fauna (including rare plants and endangered wildlife), and other natural features. Gaddy supplements his entries with topographic maps and an introduction to the area in which he distinguishes the specific ecosystems of the gorge region from those found in the rest of the Blue Ridge. |

Alpine Climbing $21.95 * For climbers who know the basics and are ready to venture higher * Written by longtime guides and climbing instructors certified by the American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) * Teaches situational thinking and learning as well as technique This intermediate-level guide addresses tools, skills, and techniques used in alpine terrain including rock, snow, ice, and glaciers at moderate altitude-approximately 5000 meters (16,000 feet) and lower. The technical protection systems are covered, of course. But 30 years of alpine climbing experience has convinced the authors that mastery-and safety-lie in the far more difficult task of knowing exactly which techniques to use, where and when. Therefore, they teach step-by-step decision-making skills, providing scenarios, checklists, and self-posed questions to inform the decision process. Alpine Climbing assumes some prior knowledge, primarily in rock climbing skills and techniques. Basic knots, belaying, rappelling, building rock anchors, leading, placing rock protection, and movement skills on rock: variations of these skills that are of particular value in the alpine environment are addressed in this book. Kathy Cosley and Mark Houston have been guides and climbing instructors for more than 20 years. In 1988, Kathy was the first American woman to climb the Eiger’s North Face. Mark was among the first guides certified by the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association. Together, they made a lightweight and fast ascent of the South Face of Aconcagua. Part of the Mountaineers Outdoor Expert series. |

Cairns $15.95 Praise for author David B. Williams: “Makes stones sing” –Kirkus Reviews “Williams’s lively mixture of hard science and piquant lore is sure to fire the readers’ curiosity” –Publisher’s Weekly *Part history, part folklore, part geology * Features charming black-and-white illustrations From meadow trails to airy mountaintops and wide open desert, cairns — those seemingly random stacks of rocks — are surprisingly rich in stories and meaning. For thousands of years cairns have been used by people to connect to the landscape and communicate with others, and are often an essential guide to travelers. Cairns, manmade rock piles can indicate a trail, mark a grave, serve as an altar or shrine, reveal property boundaries or sacred hunting grounds, and even predict astronomical activity. The Inuit have more than two dozen terms to describe cairns and their uses! In Cairns: Messengers in Stone, geologist and acclaimed nature writer David B. Williams (Stories in Stone: Travels through Urban Geology) explores the history of cairns from the moors of Scotland to the peaks of the Himalaya — where they come from, what they mean, why they’re used, how to make cairns, and more. Cairns are so much more than a random pile of rocks, knowing how to make cairns can drastically alter the meaning of the formation. Hikers, climbers, travelers, gardeners, and nature buffs alike will delight in this quirky, captivating collection of stories about cairns. |

Camp 4 $18.95 * Includes stories of such greats as Royal Robbins, Yvon Chouinard, Allen Steck, and Warren Harding * Captures the raucous, outrageous, innovative spirit of climbing in Yosemie during this period * Portrays the advances in equipment and style that revolutionized big-wall climbing In the 1960′s, California’s Yosemite Valley was the center of the rock-climbing universe. Young nonconformists — many of them the finest rock climbers in the world — channeled their energy toward the largely untouched walls and cracks. Soon climbers from around the globe were coming to Camp 4 — gathering spot for the creators of the Golden Age of Yosemite climbing — to see what all the fuss was about. Climber and author Steve Roper spent most of 10 years living in the Yosemite Valley with its intriguing inhabitants. Camp 4 is his take on the era’s top climbers and the influences behind their achievements. The text is full of stories both hilarious and revealing about the likes of bolt-disdaining Royal Robbins; fun-loving, big-wall expert Warren Harding; free-climber Frank Sacherer; multi-talented Chuck Pratt; master craftsman Yvon Chouinard; and ill-fated Mark Powell. Roper also tips his hat to the elder statesmen of the 1930s and 1940s who pioneered early, important climbs in the valley. Camp 4 looks at the most significant climbs, and the most riveting controversies of a legendary era. With more than 50 fascinating historical photographs, most never before published, Camp 4 is the definitive history of Yosemite climbing during this period. |

Camp 4: Recollections of a Yosemite Rockclimber $18.95 In the 1960s, California’s Yosemite Valley was the center of the rockclimbing universe. It was the perfect place for young nonconformists to drop out, hang loose, and channel their energy into climbing the valley’s largely untouched walls and cracks. Many of these misfits were the finest rock climbers in the world. Some even shaped the future of the sport. And by the end of the decade, climbers from around the globe were coming to Camp 4 – gathering spot for the creators of the Golden Age of Yosemite climbing – to see what all the fuss was about. Climber and author Steve Roper spent most of ten years living in Yosemite Valley with its intriguing inhabitants. Camp 4 is his take on the era’s top climbers and the (sometimes whimsical) influences behind their achievements. |

Climbing Self Rescue $19.95 * Self-rescue procedures for teams of two-the most common climbing party size * Techniques equally effective on rock, snow, and ice * Utilizes gear climbers already carry in their rack * Includes 40 one-page rescue scenarios and solutions for analysis The rope is stuck-or too short. A crucial piece of gear is MIA. You’ve wandered off route into dicey terrain. An injury leaves you or your partner in need of help. Climb long enough and finding yourself in a jam far from help is inevitable. In Climbing: Self Rescue, two longtime climbing instructors and guides teach how to improvise your own solutions, calling for outside help only when necessary. Because few climbers carry fancy (and expensive) search and rescue gear, all skills taught in this book use the items typically found on a climbing rack: rope, carabiners, slings, and cord. Text, illustrations, and photos explain knots, belaying and hauling systems, rappelling, ascension, passing knots, how to safely assist and rig an injured climber, and more. Roughly half of the book is devoted to real-life climbing scenarios and solutions ranging from moderate to severe. Because real-life situations rarely unfold as they do in practice, Climbing Self-Rescue teaches how to analyze and improvise your way out of a crisis. ANDY TYSON is a guide for Alpine Ascents, Exum and Antarctic-logistics and Expeditions. MOLLY LOOMIS is an instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), Alpine Ascents and Prescott College. Why Rock Climbers Choose Auto Belay
For the bold sort, there are all kinds of activities that will get your adrenaline going without risking your safety. Whether you are old or young, you can enjoy the physical exertion and fun of climbing walls, especially as they make outdoor and indoor climbing walls at various levels of expertise. Children can find easy grips on shorter walls, while more advanced climbers can scale to new heights with the appropriate equipment. Indoor climbing walls can be found at a variety of fitness locations, fairs and occasionally sporting good stores. If you are considering regularly visiting a climbing wall for exercise, you’ll want to invest in your own work out clothing, climbing shoes along with other equipment. It might even be cheaper if you purchase a normal membership to a health club instead of paying for every visit at a time.
While some gyms have got established climbing walls, there are also mobile climbing walls that will travel to various locations. These types of climbing walls may be used in sports courts, fairs, parks or even your own back yard. Usually, a mobile climbing wall can only hold a couple of people, so be sure that you are buying the right one to meet your needs. A mobile climbing wall may not come in the typical “wall” shape you’re used to seeing. Sometimes these walls might seem like boulders with a lot of hand holds that blend into the design. These climbing walls are wonderful when you wish to have a risk-free place for your children to play (without harnesses) in your own backyard.
With lots of different climbing walls, whether they are stationary or mobile, proper safety procedures should be followed. In some instances, you must have another person along with you who can act as a belay, however, some climbing walls feature an auto belay device that works by compressed cylinders of oil for a managed decent. An auto belay device has a system of pulleys instead of another person to act as your anchor. This is important, because with all climbing activities, safety should be your number one concern. While you might feel confident in your climbing abilities, you shouldn’t try to climb a wall unsupervised or without some sort of belay.
Some folks might not like climbing walls, however they still might try a high ropes course. Children especially like playing on these courses, as they are suspended above ground, yet they are completely safe. If you’re the type who wants to experience the adrenaline rush of heights mixed with the athletic challenge of pushing the body to its limits, consider rock climbing and other climbing adventures to fill that need. Whether you become a professional or simply like to try it out for fun, it can be a great experience for kids and grown ups alike.
